Pure power pop is hard to do. OK, The Beatles made it look easy - but who's been able to do that since? Well, these guys get pretty close. Superb album from 1980.
Like this, try the Secrets*. They're not actually the same band (at first, I thought they were - my research skills are crap). Very much sought after and ultra cultish.

Great Choice!!! One of the best full length albums out of Toronto from that period. The Secrets were the better part of the Viletones and IMO, note for note , the best band, if not the best, of Toronto's original punk era. Absolutely thrilling live act.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot. I didn't know them.

Please read my comment here. These are two different bands.

I suspect my earlier confusion had a bit to do with the presence of this wonderful blog entry! I was only aware of this album via a Bomb Records sampler. Other groups on the record I find interesting include Segarini, Battered Wives (also known as The Wives), True Confessions and Scenics. So if you happen to have any of those......
ReplyDeleteThere is actually another band called The Secrets, they are from Melbourne, Australia and were active in the late 70s.
