The Spliffs - House of Seven

Pop heaven.  The Spliffs originated in Townsville (North Queensland) in the early 80's.  They put out a single ('You Know What They'll Say') then this album.  Both releases have been blogged here - they're classics.  It's something I've been dying to do for ages - the reason for this will be obvious when you sink your ears into the delights within.  Why was this band not the biggest thing on the planet?  There hasn't even been a ceedee release - unbelievable!  Another  three singles were released to back up the LP (they contained A sides from the album) but these are not included.

By the way, here is the actual house on the LP cover (2/3 Wickham St, Townsville).  Magnificent building - many thanks to the reference for this (see comments section).

  1. Just wonderful. Saw these guys many many times. Bass player John Watson is now the Godfather of Australian Music. You can still see the house on the album cover - just street view from Google Maps as 33 Wickham Street, Townsville City, Queensland, Australia

  2. Thanks for that Steve. I certainly have fond memories of seeing them live. Hey, what about other Townsville bands: The Madmen (Tim Steward &Co) and The Coopies. Any others?

Have included a photo of the house in my original blog entry. Why not, it looks great.

  3. Yeah, Tim with The Madmen (later Screamfeeder). There was also Finding Trays Missing that I recall being quite popular. There was also a pretty good ska band, mostly army boys... were they called The Stingers? My memories of that era are a little fuzzy.

  4. I used to know these guys in TVL through my association with 4TTT - remember Jamie and Christo especially - nice guys. Another great band from there from around the same time was the Indecisives. I don't think they ever recorded anything but there is a recording from the TenTaTive Club floating around the interwebs somewhere.

  5. I used to live in that house. Vomited in my record crate one night. Washed them the next day and did a show at 4TTT. Those were the days.

  6. Wouldn't it be great if we could include an image of your record crate after the event. Hey - what else must have happened in this house?
