Boy oh boy ... talk about a secret. This band has certainly excelled in being one of the most secretive bands of all time. Is that a new form of self promotion? Either way - what we have here is an absolute classic. The name is a bit weird. No 'The' at the beginning and they tacked on an asterix (*) at the end. That's an even more over the top attempt at obscurity. But don't let this fool you - many pundits place this US release in their all time top 20 list of pop releases ... you will probably do the same *.

The Secrets 'Success Without College'. They're not the same band (I thought they were at first) - equally as good. Must be something about the band name.
You're saving me a lot of time here, Mr. W&W. I think I paid $2:00 for my copy of this...and played the damn thing to death! And here it is! They apparently had a second release called "Success Without College", sadly I do not have that one.

ReplyDeleteSorry to correct you. This is a Kansas City power pop band known as ... Secrets* and this is their only LP from 1982. Band members were: Brent Hoad (vcls, gtrs, kbds), Pat Tomek (drums), Norman Dahlor (bass, vcls), Steve Davis (gtrs, vcls). The other similarly named band (The Secrets) was a garage punk band from Toronto, CN who released "Success Without College" in 1980. They are not related.
ReplyDeleteAh. Oddly enough though, the one song I've heard from the Toronto group is a remake of "Pretty Woman", and doesn't sound markedly different. The album I found that on is a Bomb Records comp, which is indeed Canadian and has very small pictures of the album covers. But thanks for the correction. Don't want to be putting misinformation out there!
