Herbie Mann - Stone Flute

Pretty good album with many memories (possibly chemically induced).  No idea if it's yet appeared on CD but this jazz/rock release has some groovy little moments.  Herbie Mann himself is 'the man' when it comes to all things flute which makes one now think - who else out there has released as many flute based albums as this guy?  Not something that can be readily googled but you would be hard pressed to find something more worthy than this with that unique whammo factor.  If you like this, check out his 'Push Push' album in Mr Weird and Wacky.  Great LP but what about the artwork!!

  1. Excellent! Sort of a "Bitches Brew" for flute. Herbie started the Embryo label as an imprint of Warner/Atlantic and recorded some great stuff, including my friend Sandy Nassan's "Just Guitar" album (which is absolutely a must-hear). As far as the "Push Push" album art, well, too hairy for me... I suppose it gets credit for being a stepping stone to the Love Jazz/Music To Procreate By genre. I would tape a paper bag over it myself (except for the inside).

  2. Certainly is a landmark album. Have not heard Sandy's album but your recommendation will be followed up. Now ... 'Music to Procreate' !! If that's not a good name for a blog - then I don't know what is. Methinks you're on a winner here Dirk.
